Jackson's Allergy Testing

Jackson had allergy testing earlier this week and I am excited to say that things are improving!  He skin tested positive to only dairy, peanut, and oats.  This is huge!  Previously he tested positive to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, oats, barley, fish, and shellfish.  The things he tested positive have come down by quite a bit.  His dairy came down from 57 to 5.5 which is amazing.  This means possibly someone could touch his skin with dairy on their hands and he may not have an attack!!!  We still have not gotten back his blood work but we are optimistic.  If things go well we will be able to schedule food challenges (this is where he eats small amounts of the food slowly increasing the amount monitoring him for an attack).  This feels like a miracle!  We will pray that he continues to outgrow his allergies.
I must also say we are extremely thankful how smoothly the whole process went.  Jackson was very helpful and hardly cried during any of the testing.  What a brave boy he was!  Last year it took me and four other staff members to hold him down and they were still unable to draw blood.  Kaleb was really patient through the testing and sat very quietly (Sitting quietly is really hard for him to do-so we were proud of him for all of his efforts).  Alanna slept in her car seat the entire time and only woke up at the end of our visit.  In all I do not believe things could have gone any better.  Thanks for all of your prayers Grandmas!

The most common tests performed on a patient to determine what is causing their allergies consist of scratch tests and blood tests. If the allergy appears to be the result of a food, a food diary may be necessary to help determine the allergen. Once the allergen is determined, there are several options for a patient to help them control their allergic reactions.

Thank you for your concern and information.  Unfortunately, we are all to aware of how food allergies are diagnosed, treated, and such.  We have kept food diaries for several months at a time to determine our sons allergens.  We have skin scratch testing as well as blood testing once a year.  We keep a food diary log for a test group.  We check in at a six month period with our physicians on diet.  In addition, the foods that our son has negative skin and blood testing are then subject to an oral food challenge, which is generally done at National Jewish.  This is the number one facility in the United States for the last 12 years for respiratory diseases.  My son has to keep his epi-pen jr., inhaler, and benadryl with him at all times.  I appreciate you concern that we may not have all the information on food allergies available.  The rise of food allergies is increasing at an alarming rate.  It is important that we bring as much attention to this as we can to keep our children safe.
